Stan Wawrinka didn't get to play on Tuesday at the 2023 Croatia Open due to rain, but he made up for that on Wednesday, cruising past Filip Misolic.
The Swiss veteran was scheduled to play against Misolic on Tuesday but he didn't get to do that due to rain. They returned on Wednesday, and Wawrinka had no issues in winning that one as he cruised in two simple sets.
Misolic is a young and up-and-coming player who plays his best on clay, but Wawrinka won a Grand Slam on the surface. It happened a decade ago, but that shows how good he can be on the surface. He was really good in this one taking the opening set behind two breaks.
He lost his serve once in the process but made up for it by breaking Misolic twice as the Austrian struggled with his second serve. The second set started even more impressively for Wawrinka, even though he struggled to hit his serve. An early 2-0 lead for the comfortable setup for the rest of the match.
Wawrinka has been pretty solid on clay this year winning a trophy in doubles last week in Gstaad. That was something that didn't happen in a very long time but it was a good moment for the veteran who worked hard to get back to playing tennis.
Wawrinka continued applying heavy pressure on his opponent who simply couldn't find a way to outlast him in the rallies. The Swiss veteran has far more power than Misolic who needs to work a bit more before he can take on the best in the world.
While Wawrinka is not among the best ten or twenty, he certainly has enough experience to use his chances when you give it to him. The match was all about that, as Misolic was 1/5 on break points. The final score was 6-3 6-2.
