'Wasting It All': Berrettini Criticized By Former Italian No. 1 Pietrangeli

| by Sebastian Dahlman

Former legendary Italian player Nicola Pietrangeli criticized Matteo Berrettini as he is 'wasting it all' according to the legend.

Matteo Berrettini has had a very bad season so far struggling with injuries and generally poor form when he did play. Unlike last year when he managed to put together some strong showings on grass, this year the Italian seemingly rushed back which proved the wrong decision.

He was beaten easily by Sonego in Stuttgart as Berretini was spotted leaving the court in tears. He provided an update after that loss but also pulled out of Queen's leaving his Wimbledon participation in serious doubt. It's just a bad sequence of events for Berrettini but according to Pietrangeli who talked to Puntodebreak, most of that is self-inflicted and not really down to bad luck.

Berrettini is 25 years old. He's handsome, rich and famous, but what does he want in life? He doesn't understand how lucky he is. He earns millions of euros and he's wasting it all. Honestly, it doesn't hurt me.

Pietrangeli on Berrettini

Nobody really knows what's going on in Berrettini's life as there has been some turmoil in his private life as well. A very public relationship with an Italian presenter left many wondering whether the Italian is committed to tennis at all.

No I [don't] know what's going through his head. I don't think he knows it himself, no one knows. It's a pity, you have a fortune in your hand and you insist on making it complicated. The problem, as I said, is that you never we will know 100% what is happening to him. We can all think of one thing, but maybe it has nothing to do with it.

Finally, Pietrangeli confirmed that he does hope that Berrettini works through these tough times and gets his career back on track. His withdrawal from Queen's left Wimbledon in doubt and the legend doesn't think Berrettini will play at the event. It would be his second consecutive missed Wimbledon for the former finalist.

"These are not easy times for him and I hope he can get out of this spiral soon. Nobody knows the truth about his physical problems, maybe even he didn't either. We only know that unfortunately he withdrew from Queen's. Sincerely, I don't know if he'll be ready to play Wimbledon."
