Holger Rune is the highest-ranked player at the 2023 Laver Cup, and he might not play at the event because of his injuries.
Holger Rune signed up to play for Team Europe at the 2023 Laver Cup. It would be the first one he's ever contested, and not only that, he's the highest-ranked player in the ATP Rankings to sign up for the event. All the previous editions had some star power, but this year misses the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, and it was the young Dane who was supposed to lead the young field.
Fans have already complained about it on social media, finding the event field a bit lacking, and it might get worse. Rune recently played for Denmark in the Davis Cup and suffered his 7th straight loss. He didn't play a good match, but he's not been playing well for a while now.
An injury was the culprit, something he confirmed in a recent social media post where he talked about what had been going on. The injury is gone but he's still suffering from the consequences of it which causes him to play with pain.
It will get better, but it won't likely get better in a few days, which is when the Laver Cup starts. Rune didn't mention the event in his update nor has any news of him withdrawing come as of now, but there are some doubts about his participation.
Will he simply be physically present and not play? Will he opt to play? Will he skip it? We don't know, but what we do know is that he'll be playing with pain if he does attend the tournament. Time will tell, but it would be good to have Rune there.
The event is highly dependent on the star power that it can produce for fans. You don't see the best of the best competing in a team format often, so that's the whole allure of it.
