Alexander Zverev is feeling the fatigue these days, but the German is battling it in hopes of securing a spot at the year-end ATP event in Turin.
Zvere has fond memories of Turin having won the ATP Finals since the event moved to the Italian city. He hopes to be there this year as well, and some of the most recent results have undoubtedly made it more likely to happen.
Zverev started the year poorly, earning the 10th win of the year only at the Monte-Carlo Masters in April. Six months later, Zverev is up to 50 wins now with two trophies, the second of which happened at the Chengdu Open recently.
He's managed a sensational turnaround and peaked at a level pretty close to what he used to play before getting injured. The goal is clear, to make it to Turin, and he's on pace to be there, though more work needs to be done. It will be tough as he's already feeling fatigued, but he doesn't want to miss the Finals, so he will keep pushing as he revealed in a talk to TennisTV at the 2023 Shanghai Masters.
I think I've been playing well over the last few months, actually. I have a goal of mine, I want to be one of the best eight players and I want to be in Turin. And that's why, you know, I think I am tired, but I kind of forget that I am, I need to kind of power through it.
And so far the Chinese swing has been good. I mean, I won title and made semis in Beijing, I feel like I played very good tennis there as well. And we'll see how Shanghai goes."
Shanghai has been good to him in the past, and a good run here would be a major step towards Turin so let's see how he does. He will play Roman Safiullin in the second round.
