The ATP is set to reward five players with the most points at the ATP 500 level tournaments with a fair share from a bonus pool amounting to $1.3 million.
It's the first year that the ATP has exercised this incentive. In its 2023 rulebook, the ATP clarified the basis for earning the bonus. Aside from garnering the most points at the 500-level tournaments, players will need to fulfill the ATP Tour 500 commitment requirements, which is to play a minimum of four events at that level.
The bonus pool will be distributed to the five players based on total points earned. The player with the most points will receive $600,000. In second place, the ATP will reward a player with a paycheck amounting to $300,000. The player with the third-most points will pocket $200,000. Coming in fourth place also attracts a six-figure bonus pay worth $175,000. While the last on the list will earn $75,000.
"Players that are in good standing and fulfill the ATP Tour 500 commitment requirements, shall be eligible for the ATP Tour 500 bonus pool. The order of standings will be based on total Pepperstone ATP Rankings points earned at the ATP Tour 500 events in 2023. The 2023 ATP Tour 500 bonus pool will be a total of USD $1,300,000,"
The five players in contention are Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, Alex de Minaur, and Cameron Norrie. Each of these players has played a minimum of four 500-level tournaments and has won at least one title. British left-hander Norrie is the player with the fewest points (635), but still is in contention to finish in the top spot.
That is because Norrie has signed up to play in two ATP 500 events before the end of the 2023 season, in Tokyo and Vienna. Top on the list is Carlos Alcaraz who owns 1,480 and is scheduled to play in Basel in late October. The closest challenger is Daniil Medvedev who has 1,390 points and will defend his crown in Austria's capital in the same period.
