Nick Kyrgios signed up to compete at the 2023 United Cup. It is a new tournament, which is similar to the Hopman Cup.
In 2022, Kyrgios enjoyed probably the best season of his tennis career. He won the doubles title at the Australian Open, and he also reached the singles final at Wimbledon. He didn't win that title, as Novak Djokovic proved to be too strong.
In 2023, the Australian will try to follow up on those results. Although the new season is still more than two months away, Kyrgios already knows where he will start.
He signed up to compete in the United Cup, which is a new mixed-team competition. It will put players from the ATP and WTA Tours into teams based on their nationalities, creating a similar format to the Hopman Cup.
Kyrgios loves the team environment, which is why he signed up for this tournament, looking forward to making his debut.
"I think it’s a great initiative. I think those are important events to have, especially for the crowd, to see how the top female and top male — whoever enters — can play for their country."
Kyrgios loved playing in the Hopman Cup when the competition existed. He led Australia to a victory in 2016 alongside Daria Gavrilova, and he would like to experience the same success also at the United Cup.
"I have some great memories. I obviously won Hopman Cup one year and it was probably one of the cooler memories of my career. So I think it's going to be a good event."
"I just love being there for my teammates. I love that team environment. When you win together, and you lose together, I think that's easier than being alone. It's going to be really exciting. If I play it, which I probably will, I think it's going to be cool."
