Eurosport tennis analyst Mats Wilander reacted similarly to John McEnroe when he was asked about Nadal's Roland Garros triumph.
Rafael Nadal wrote tennis history once more by winning the Roland Garros triumph for the 14th time in his career. The Spaniard extended his previous record with no player even remotely close to winning a single grand slam as many times as Nadal won the French Open. Speaking moments after the match, Wilander said:
"We're witnessing sports history with Rafa. We thought last year and even now this year and mister McEnroe said it 'this record will never be beaten.' No. This record will never be beaten"
They are both probably right because this is maybe the single greatest achievement in sports history. It's up to debate and preference but it's truly remarkable.
Wilander then continued saying: "I would think it must be the sweetest title [that Rafa has won at Roland-Garros]. First of all, he didn’t even know if he was going to be able to play."
"Let’s now not just focus on 14 [French Open titles], but 22 [Grand Slam singles titles]. He is ahead of Roger and Novak now. Maybe this could be the main reason why he will be the greatest player of all time."
"But again, he’s so humble and so in the present moment that it sounds like he is going to keep going."
