Thiem Provides Update After Being Eliminated From US Open By Mysterious Illness

by Sebastian Dahlman

Dominic Thiem played some really solid tennis at the 2023 US Open, but it ended with an illness that forced him to retire.

Theim hasn't played very good tennis for much of this year, but he was excited to make a return at the US Open. It's the only Grand Slam he won in his career, and it will always be a special place for him. The Austrian was supposed to prepare in Winston-Salem but pulled out of the ATP 250 event before his first match.

In New York, he took down Alexander Bublik in the first round, setting up a clash against Ben Shelton in round two. The match was a very good one, with Thiem playing well, but after Shelton took the opening set in the tiebreak, the Austrian retired. He had nausea, threw up before the match, and now provided an update on Instagram.

It is never nice to not be able to finish a match, but this time it hurts even more because this tournament means so much to me. At the beginning of next week, I have some medical tests in Austria and then I'll know more.

But I'll take the positive with me that I can play at a very high level again and that gives me a lot of confidence for the upcoming tournaments. Thank you all for the incredible support

It's unclear what is bothering Thiem, but the hope is that the tests come back fine and he returns to tennis soon. The next part of the season could be a good one for him if he manages to replicate the level he showed in New York.

Health will be crucial, though as he won't finish the season positively unless he's fully healthy. The goal is to end it on a good note after spending much of this year struggling.
