Holger Rune made a return to the courts at the 2023 Hopman Cup played in Nice and he shockingly lost to Leandro Riedi.

The Hopman Cup is back, at least a version of the former iconic event and today we had Switzerland taking on Denmark. There is no Belinda Bencic for Switzerland as she pulled out of the event so it was time for Celine Naef to prove herself on the courts.

She recently made headlines by beating Venus Williams in Den Bosch but couldn't do the same against Clara Tauson. The Danish talent proved herself pretty strong beating Naef in two simple sets 6-2 6-3 to give her nation the point. Then it was time for Holger Rune to do the same but he couldn't get it done.

The young Dane was stunned by Leandro Riedi in two sets to make the score 1-1 between the countries. Neither player served that well in the match as they both hovered around 50 %. Rune had a lot of trouble on his second serve as Riedi proved quite aggressive both with his returns and his play generally.

The Danish player also wasn't as sharp as he needed to be, losing the crucial battles. He faced seven break points saving five of them but that gave his opponent still two breaks to work with. In a match where Rune only saw one break point and failed to convert it..well it proved quite costly.

Riedi finished off the match 6-4 6-3 to set up the very exciting mixed doubles match that will see all four of them back on the courts to see which country secures the win in this first match of the revived Hopman Cup. This was Rune's first match since the Wimbledon exit and he didn't look that great.
