Grigor Dimitrov is quietly having the best season since 2017, and his win over Carlos Alcaraz further adds to that claim.
The Bulgarian hasn't won 40 matches since 2017, and he's about to do that this year, with it possibly coming even this week at the 2023 Shanghai Masters. His latest win came over Carlos Alcaraz, a stunning win where he outsmarted arguably one of the best players in the world right now.
It was an interesting matchup where Dimitrov played really smart tennis avoiding his usual demons of letting a match go out of control, and cruised towards the win in three sets.
Even when he lost an early lead in the first set, Dimitrov remained vigilant and won the next two to secure a huge victory. He was very complimentary of Alcaraz in the post-match interview, calling him incredibly gifted.
I mean, clearly he's, I mean, physically he's in another level. I feel like I'm in a very good level physically and fast balls he was getting to, it was just, even for me as a player, it was nice, I mean, amazing to see and feel as well in the same time.
You know, tennis is a very tough sport, but also at the same time you need to be quite intelligent to know what to do at the right time. I think at times I really had to sort of slow down the game a little bit, and be a little bit more rational in terms of what decisions I had to do, how I had to handle certain situations, where I was serving and all that.
As Dimitrov explained, experience certainly had something to do with that. We've seen Alcaraz flamed out a couple of times against older players, and while his level was pretty good today, some of his choices were questionable.
So, yeah, that is definitely experience, but, yeah, you always need to, I feel like I have enough tools in my bag to really, you know, pick them when I really need them. I think today, on quite a few moments throughout the match, I had the answer for it. I think that also made a big difference throughout the match.
