The withdrawal spree of Nick Kyrgios continued as the Australian withdrew from the 2023 edition of the Laver Cup.
Nick Kyrgios was generally always present for the Laver Cup, enjoying the somewhat loose nature of the event. The Australian won't however be part of the 2023 edition as he withdrew from it despite initially signing up for the event.
The news of him joining the Team World lineup broke in April, as many assumed that he would be fully healthy by the time the competition rolls around. Well, it's inching closer but Kyrgios is not yet ready struggling with injuries.
He dealt with a knee injury during the grass season but apparently recovered well enough to play at Wimbledon. Unfortunately, he sustained a wrist injury that forced him to withdraw. He's yet to play since then, with his only match this year happening at the Stuttgart Open, where he was beaten by Yibing Wu.
He's been withdrawing from multiple events since then. He withdrew from the Ultimate Tennis Showdown in Los Angeles. He withdrew from the Citi Open in Washington and then also the Canadian Open in Toronto and the Cincinnati Masters. As if that wasn't bad enough, he also withdrew from the US Open.
He's now withdrawing from the Laver Cup, and looking very likely that we won't see Kyrgios at all this year anymore. It remains to be seen what will happen as he didn't speak or provide any kind of update regarding his plans, but considering his modus operandi in the past, this is likely it.
A very unfortunate development for Kyrgios who had his best ever season in 2022. Many expected him to return with a great hunger this year but unfortunately, a lot of other things happened. The hope remains that we see him fully healthy next year but until he actually plays, that will remain a big if.
