Andy Murray will return to action at the 2023 Lexus Surbiton Trophy ATP Challenger event on a wildcard entry.
Murray has not featured competitively since he suffered a round of 16 defeat against Stan Wawrinka at the BNP Paribas Primrose Bordeaux Challenger competition in May. Subsequently, the 36-year-old Brit withdrew from the 2023 Roland Garros as he moved his attention away from the clay court season and towards the 2023 grass events.
To kick off his grass court season, Murray will participate in the Lexus Surbiton Trophy and the official Lawn Tennis Association confirmed the former world number one's entry via its official Twitter channel. In response, Murray explained that he was ready to get back to grass competitions and is looking forward to support from a home crowd.
"The LTA’s Lexus Surbiton Trophy is a great way for me to start my grass-court season. It’s nice to play somewhere that has the feel of a traditional club and I’m hoping to get some good matches and practice in there during the week in front of the British fans.”
It will be Murray's first appearance at the Surbiton Trophy since 2004 when he reached the semi-finals before losing to Denis Kudla. Murray will also hope to build form and fitness in the hopes of reaching the Wimbledon main draw after the former world number one missed out on the Grand Slam finals last year.
In addition, the two-time Wimbledon champion is joining a talented field in the men's side of the competition, with several top British players entering the draw. British number two Daniel Evans also received a wild card entry into the competition, while world number 58 Jack Draper is also participating at Surbiton this season.
The 2023 Lexus Surbiton Trophy will get started on Monday, June 5 and run through until Sunday, June 11.
