Daniil Medvedev was pretty vocal about the harsh conditions at the 2023 US Open in New York during his match against Andrey Rublev, and he didn't hold back after the match either.
Medvedev ultimately navigated that match better, winning it in three sets. He was glad to escape in three, especially since it was far from a clean performance. He called MTOs and was heard complaining about the conditions a couple of times during the match, and he continued after the match.
The conditions were quite brutal; there is no denying that, especially in the final few days. New York tends to get quite hot in the summer, and this year's summer is extending quite a bit into September, which isn't that usual, but players have been playing in harsh conditions for years. It's not something that popped up out of nowhere.
Yeah, tough, because I could talk a lot, brutal conditions for both of us. I mean, I don't know if it could be seen through the camera, because we are sweating so much and use a lot of towels, I have no skin left on my nose here, and, like, here it's red, but it's not because of the sun so it's not like you're burned but I have no skin left.
I just saw Andrey in the locker room and his face very red, and it's also not because of the sun so I face very red, and it's also not because of the sun so I guess it's the same. That tells everything, like we left everything out there.
A conversation about the conditions should take place, but it's very tricky to navigate. Global warming is a thing; the planet is getting hotter, and this summer is the hottest on record. It's not going to go the other way, so outside of moving the event to a later date or a more temperate climate, there is very little you can do.
Medvedev struggled to formulate anything when asked about it, and it just shows that there is very little you can do to counter it.
The thing is that I'm not sure what can we do. Because probably we cannot stop the tournament for four days because it's been what, three, four days it's been brutal like this, because then it basically ruins everything, the TV, even the tickets, everything. It ruins everything.
