Nick Kyrgios had dealt with some serious stuff in his life, some of which he talked about and some things that he didn't talk about too much.
The Australian has been quite open about his battle with depression and self-harm. It's been a tough time and it happened not too long but he was able to turn his life around feeling grateful about being in a much better place right now. His current partner and family members are those that he credits most with helping him get out of it.
Besides the ongoing battle with depressive thoughts, Kyrgios also dealt with all kinds of hate which is an experience that is not exclusive to tennis players. Him being quite fiery and outspoken only gets him more hate than the average bloke but he's been a good sport about it, dealing in the best way he can.
One specific type of hatred he received is racism. Australia is a country mostly comprised of immigrants, some of them have been there for generations turning native in the process while some are more recent. Kyrgios is a child of immigrants. His father is Greek and his mother is Malaysian. Due to that, he's had to deal with racism, quite a lot of it actually.
I have. I have dealt with bad racism. Australia is a pretty racist country in general, one of the most racist countries in the world. I think it is (on Australia being racist). I have grown some thick skin in sport and in life, so I deal with it better than I did. But it’s never easy.
It's not a topic Kyrgios talked about often but he's not shy about it. Speaking to Men's Health, Kyrgios explained that some of the most iconic sports people in Australia told him that he and his family should go back to where they're from.
Some of the most iconic people in sport in Australia have told me and my family to go back where we came from and this kind of bullshit. Stuff that isn’t acceptable, not acceptable at all.
