Nick Kyrgios has revealed that he has experienced the intense highs and lows of tennis that have made him either love or hate the sport.
As an ATP player, Kyrgios has had plenty of ups and downs through a whirlwind career that has lasted for a decade. At Wimbledon in 2022, Kyrgios produced a stunning run to reach his first-ever Grand Slam final, but the Australian player has also previously shared his rock-bottom moments in tennis when he was self-harming and had to attend a psychiatric ward.
In a recent interview with Men's Health, the 28-year-old was asked about his relationship with tennis and how he perceives the sport. The world number 33 gave a brutally honest answer that shows his bond with tennis is more complex than either liking or disliking the sport.
"I’ve definitely gone through phases when I’ve loved it and others when I’ve hated it, and sometimes at the same time. So, I love tennis and… [pause] That’s a really hard question. You know, I’m not sure if I can answer it."- Kyrgios said in an interview with Men's Health
Also, Kyrgios shared more about how he feels going out onto the court when he is at a low point of disliking tennis. Again, the Australian player honestly highlighted the difficulty he faces when forcing himself to play if he's not in the mood.
However, the former Wimbledon finalist explained that one part of the game he really enjoys is the training.
"It’s torture. It’s not easy. [Pause] It’s really hard. Your energy feels all over the place. You’re not doing it for yourself but for other people. There have, for sure, been moments in my career when I’ve not being playing for myself, and then it’s almost impossible to perform."
"I love to train, to get out there and reach a point of vulnerability."
