Nick Kyrgios is one of the favorites to win the title at the 2022 US Open, but it seems that the 27-year-old Australian is also thinking about his home.
Kyrgios is a person who really cares about his family, especially when things are not going really well. Recently, his mum was admitted to the hospital.
Many times over the past few months, the Australian expressed his desire to finally go back to Australia. He did that also ahead of the 2022 US Open when he spoke about his first-round matchup against a good friend, Thanasi Kokkinakis.
The 2022 Wimbledon finalist admitted that most of the fans don't see into the everyday lives of athletes. Kyrgios, like any other person, has plenty of challenges also away from the courts, like the health of his mother.
"There’s a lot of things people don’t see. They only see me winning, losing, throwing a racquet, doing those things. They don’t really understand the challenges that I face or what people on tour face, what’s going on in their personal lives."
Therefore, Kyrgios has a relatively unique approach when it comes to the last Grand Slam tournament of the season. Regardless of whether he wins or loses early, he sees both options as wins.
If he wins, he succeeds, which is what he ultimately wants to do as a competitor. But if he loses, he can go home sooner and finally see his family.
"Whether I win or lose, it's going to be the same for me. ... It's a win-win for me. If I win, it's more money and another great result. If I lose, I get to go home."
Kyrgios has been one of the loudest voices when it comes to criticizing how challenging the schedule is for tennis players, especially those coming from Australia.
