'Interesting To See If Rune Keeps Looking To Him After Every Point': Connors On Becker's Coaching

Holger Rune played his first ATP event with Boris Becker on the sidelines coaching him, and former player Jimmy Connors was fascinated by it.

It was a really interesting event for Holger Rune as he won a couple of matches, which is good for him. He didn't achieve his goal of going all the way and still hasn't secured a spot in Turin, but it was the best outing he's had in months, no matter how weird that sounds.

He's been struggling a lot lately, and part of that has to be motivation to reach out to Becker, who shares some similarities with the way Rune likes to play tennis. It will take a while to see the full effect of their cooperation, but this first impression was more than solid.

Former player Jimmy Connors talked about what he saw from their first few matches in the latest episode of the Advantage Connors podcast.

It’s going to be interesting for me to see if Holger Rune keeps looking up to him after every point. I don’t know if Boris will go for that. Boris is kind of old school you know, and when he was playing and Tiriac was in his corner and he went through all that when he was young, he tended to his business on the court.

He wasn’t looking up every minute to his box, looking for instructions. He knew what he had to do. So, it’s going to be interesting. I would be looking at that, that’s going to be important. That [Rune-Becker] match right there is going to make me watch a little more tennis.

A big event for Rune is coming up in Paris, where he actually won the trophy last year. He needs a good outing to secure Turin, so let's see what the team can cook up.
