In an exclusive interview for a Serbian outlet, Novak Djokovic revealed that he would like to play the events in South America.
Novak Djokovic has a very multicultural team with members from all sides of the world. One of them is Carlos Gomez-Herera, his hitting partner, who is Spanish and has also played tennis. The Spaniard talked with Djokovic about the passion South American tennis fans bring to the matches, and the Serbian would like to experience it.
Djokovic never experienced that as he never took part in the Golden Swing in his career, which isn't that odd. He didn't really play that well on clay early on in his career and simply opted to go to the Middle East and play in Qatar and Dubai. Even so, there is a desire to change that.
In a recent exclusive interview with Serbian Newspaper Sportal, Djokovic revealed his wish to play in South America wanting to see the passion of the fans for tennis.
Tournaments in South America. I was just talking to Charlie [sparring partner] and I hope we can do it. It's a wish, of course, now the Grand Slams are my priority and maybe the opportunity will come when I play those tournaments.
Why them? Somehow, the passion of people in South America for sports, and therefore for tennis, is something that is unique and I want to experience that week after week playing in those competitions. Well, we'll see. Maybe in some distant future, since I have time, I'm young."
We don't know when Djokovic will opt to do that or whether he even will during his active playing days. It's somewhat logistically tricky as you insert a relatively brief clay period between predominantly hard-court events, so it doesn't really make much sense for most players.
