Jannik Sinner's win at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships was celebrated in Italy, and that included his fellow ATP colleagues.
Before Sinner, there was never an Italian men's singles champion at the Wimbledon Championships. The 23-year-old changed that by beating Carlos Alcaraz in the final, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. While the Spaniard won the first set, he couldn't trouble his opponent in the remainder of the match.
Sinner seemed to be in control for the vast majority of the final, and that's what delighted many Italian fans. One of those watching was the current ATP World No. 40 player, Lorenzo Sonego.
Despite being Sinner's rival on the ATP Tour, he is also his friend, as the two have often played doubles together. Therefore, it's not a surprise that he supported his fellow compatriot in the final.
After the final, Sonego spoke to the Italian publication Tuttosport, discussing the final match. He knew that after the Roland Garros final, Sinner wanted to bounce back, and he managed to do just that. Sonego was happy about his friend's win.
"It was a great moment for all of us Italians, and obviously for me. We've trained together often this season, and we've even played doubles several times throughout our careers. I knew Jannik was desperate to bounce back after his incredible defeat at Roland Garros, and he wasted no time. He confirmed he's the best player in the world, especially mentally."
As a player, Sonego obviously has a great eye for the game. According to the 30-year-old, Sinner handled the match almost perfectly, confirming that he is currently the best player in the world.
Sonego liked Sinner's second serve, which he thinks troubled Alcaraz the most. On top of that, he was happy to see how Sinner bounced back after losing the first set of the match.
"Jannik delivered a great performance from every perspective. He was courageous in the most crucial moments of the match, for example, hitting second serves that annihilated the Spaniard."
"He was very good at coming back after losing the first set and capitalising, despite fighting, on the break he gained at the start of the second set. He gradually took away the confidence of the two-time Wimbledon champion and went on to deservedly take the title."
Although it was not he who won, Sonego saw the win as one for all of the Italians. Seeing his compatriot lift the trophy made him happy, as he loves to see Italian tennis progress.
"His emotion was also ours, mine specifically, when I think of all the fans who had never seen an Italian player triumph at Wimbledon. It will be a further incentive for all of us and the entire Italian tennis movement to always do better. Coolness and courage are two weapons that only greats like him possess and contribute to reaching the top."
