Rune Argues For More Personality in Tennis Amid Medvedev & Zverev Feud

Tennis is largely considered a sterile sport and that's mostly by design as it discourages anything but the pristine image it likes to portray.

Nothing in nature is perfect and neither are tennis players with many showing that they too can get angry and do questionable things. While that shouldn't be rewarded, many have called for players to show more of themselves in an effort to make the sport more relatable.

Holger Rune is certainly one of those bright new personalities shining on the ATP Tour and he's not afraid to engage with the crowd. He'd like to see more of that referencing the recent clash between Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev explaining in an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, that not all players will or can be friends.

You cannot have 100 players in the top 100 and all of them are best friends with each other. There always will be some moments and things will happen like for example between Zverev and Medvedev. For us as players, it would certainly be easier if we would just handle it by ourselves so that it would not come out.

While it might occasionally be a bad sight, Rune thinks that it would allow fans new insight into the dynamic of the sport that is very competitive. It could bring in new fans because essentially people connect with other people not just the bouncing ball.

But for the fans, for the public and to gain even new fans, it is cool to have some personalities and some things happen and come out. It has to happen a bit more than just hitting the ball back. Fans admire the sport but also characters. If you can show it to a certain point, then it is a positive thing for the sport.
