Alexander Zverev has a pretty big month coming up and former player Tommy Haas urged him to flip the switch ahead of it.
Zverev played some of the best tennis he played last year on clay and the upcoming month will see him defend a lot of the points he earned last year. If he doesn't play well, and he hasn't played that well so far, Zverev might see himself drop even more in the ATP Ranking which would only complicate things.
His compatriot and former player Tommy Haas urged him to flip the switch because if he doesn't he will find himself in a situation where he will need to take on big players early as he tries to rebuild his points total.
Struggles of players like Thiem and Murray over the years have shown that it can be a very draining and long process, and even Zverev could have recently faced a drop from the German No. 1 spot for the first time in 7 years.
Zverev has had a lot of ups and downs for a long time, which is quite normal after such a long injury. But at some point he has to flip the switch. He has to defend points for the next three or four weeks. Otherwise he falls out of the top 30, 40 or 50 in the world. Then the strong opponents threaten early in the tournaments. This situation is new to him.
The other side of that coin is pursuing his dreams. Zverev made no secret that he wants to be a Grand Slam champion one day however it's going to get only tougher as new players like Carlos Alcaraz emerge and rise through the rankings.
It is becoming increasingly difficult for him to achieve his last major career goal – winning the Grand Slam tournament. The next star is here in Alcaraz. And you still have Tsitsipas, Medvedev, Rune, Sinner, [Lorenzo] Musetti. The Americans come with Fritz, Paul and Tiafoe. The competition never sleeps.
