Felix Auger-Aliassime couldn't follow up on his positive showing from Indian Wells as he lost in the third round of the 2023 Miami Open.
During the first leg of the Sunshine Double, the young Canadian lost only to Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals. In Miami, he started well against Thiago Monteiro, but he couldn't beat Francisco Cerundolo, who usually plays well at this ATP 1000 event.
But it wasn't so much about a good performance from the Argentinian, who is last year's semifinalist. Auger-Aliassime couldn't find his rhythm and kept missing too much during the match and Cerundolo took advantage of that and used his chances.
In the first set, the Canadian couldn't produce anything on his return games, winning only four points in the set. Moreover, Auger-Aliassime struggled also on his serve, hitting only one ace while committing three double faults, a rare stat from the Canadian.
His opponent used that to his advantage and broke Auger-Aliassime two times, winning the first set 6-2.
The world no. 6 started badly also in the second set as he faced a 2-4 deficit. But this time, Auger-Aliassime was able to break back and he was only one point away from making sure there will be at least a tie-break in the second set.
In the eleventh game, the Canadian led 40-15 on his serve, but he lost the following four rallies and Cerundolo got the crucial break. The Argentinian then had to fight on his last service game, but he confirmed the break to win the match 6-2, 7-5, and reach the fourth round of the 2023 Miami Open.
Up next, he will play against the winner of the match between the 12th-seeded Frances Tiafoe from the United States and Lorenzo Sonego from Italy.
