'Easy To Be Out Mentally': Alcaraz Proud To 'Stay Strong' Despite Missed Chances In Shanghai

Carlos Alcaraz endured a really tough matchup against Daniel Evans at the 2023 Shanghai Masters, as he was down a break in both sets.

Alcaraz and Evans contested a really fun match at the US Open, which Alcaraz won in four sets, and this one certainly didn't disappoint either. It was a two-set match but one that lasted almost three hours as it was so competitive.

Evans was doing a great job navigating this matchup and many break points the Spaniard had. The Brit was up a break in both sets but ultimately didn't win either, as Alcaraz managed to produce a really strong level to turn around the match.

He was pretty proud of his effort after the match, admitting that staying mentally strong was crucial to winning the match. It makes sense because Evans was playing really well, and he would have beaten plenty of players today, but it wasn't enough for Carlos Alcaraz.

Well, I think stay strong mentally was the key to be able to win this match, because I had a lot of opportunities that I missed them, all of them. It would be easy to be out mentally, you know, and I think I stayed strong in that part, and keep going, waiting my chances and trying to play, you know, my best in every moment, I think that was the key.

Alcaraz will hope to go all the way in this event, and the next challenge is Grigor Dimitrov, who has had a really strong season. He'll be the favourite, especially if he brings this kind of level and he's expected to do so. Alcaraz is in pursuit of Djokovic to finish as year-end number one, and this event is a crucial one in that pursuit.
