Novak Djokovic has dealt with a couple of injuries in his life and won a few big events while dealing with said injuries.
According to Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley, one of those was a hamstring tear at last year's Australian Open. The tear was 3 cm, which is significant, so much so that plenty of players disputed Tiley's claims about the size of the tear.
They argued that Djokovic couldn't have played as well as he did if he really dealt with something like that. Despite battling with an injury, he still won the trophy, and he's the defending champion at the first Grand Slam of the season this year.
Some of those experiences give him a lot of confidence ahead of this year's Australian Open because he's again dealing with an injury. His wrist started to bother him at the United Cup, as he was beaten by Alex de Minaur in one of his matches.
Despite the apparent injury, the 24-time Grand Slam champion played down any concerns. The hope was that he'd recover by the time the event rolled around, and that seems to be the case. He spoke about the state of his injury ahead of his first match at the tournament.
"It's not as bad as some other injuries I had here. 2021 and last year I had worse injuries that I had to deal with. So, yeah, I mean, I can't predict whether it's going to come back. Once I start playing more matches, stress levels go higher. I don't know. We have to find out."
Djokovic isn't usually one to announce things in a great way so we'll have to take his word for it. We'll see how he plays in his first-round match against Dino Prizmic and whether there are any signs of discomfort in the wrist.
