Novak Djokovic is one of the players that gets bashed the most on social media and it's not something that surprises him.
Djokovic has always prided himself on his authenticity standing by his beliefs even when they are not very popular. The prime example was his 'free choice' stance during the COVID-19 pandemic when he opted to rather miss events than be compelled to take something against his will.
He has always openly spoken about things he believes in, creating the PTPA believing that it could do a better job for players than the ATP. Those two are some of the things that made him unpopular among fans and evidence of that can be found daily on social media. It's not something that surprises him.
Does that surprise you? Personally, I’d be surprised if it were any different. As Kobe used to say, it’s a great quote: ‘Haters are a good problem to have. Nobody hates the good ones. They hate the great ones.’ I don’t hate anybody, I don’t nurture that kind of emotion and I don’t raise my kids that way. Hate is a horrendous emotion. If someone hates me, I think that says more about that person (than me).
Even though he doesn't really engage in hate as an emotion, Djokovic would have obviously preferred not to be hated as much as he is. It doesn't bother him but he also thinks that he doesn't deserve it either and he wouldn't change anything in his life even with the amount of hate he does get.
I wouldn’t change anything in my life because I’ve done everything to the best of my knowledge and abilities in a particular moment. Yes, I’ve made a lot of mistakes, but at least I was authentic, I was being myself – I’d choose that every time compared to saying whatever pleases those that abide by the standards of the establishment.
