Daniil Medvedev was supposed to participate in the Ultimate Tennis Showdown in Frankfurt from September 15th till the 17th, but he won't play at the event.
Medvedev last played at the US Open, where he made his way to the final only to lose to Novak Djokovic. The match was not long, but it was a rather disappointing one for Medvedev, who failed to replicate the level he had in the previous round against Carlos Alcaraz.
The Russian was supposed to make his return at the UTS event in Frankfurt, but he won't be playing as he withdrew from the event, which event organizer Patrick Mouratoglou confirmed. The French coach knows Medvedev well, as the Russian frequently uses his Academy to practice and prepare for events living close by as well.
Mouratoglou confirmed that Medvedev told him he was simply empty after the US Open, which is understandable. He also withdrew from the Zhuhai Championships, and ATP 250 tournament, clearly needing some rest. Grigor Dimitrov will replace him at the event, joining a field comprising Casper Ruud, Andrey Rublev, Diego Schwartzman, Benoit Paire, Gael Monfils, and others.
He’s a very nice guy so he didn’t pretend he was injured. He just said, ‘I’m completely empty.' On the other side we are happy that Grigor was able to jump in so fast. We all think that he’s very exciting to watch.
The competition has been a very popular one among players due to its unique format and rather chill atmosphere. It's grown so much in popularity that it expanded beyond Antibes and the Mouratoglou Academy to being staged worldwide.
An earlier edition of the event was held in Los Angeles, which saw plenty of good players take part, another tournament is held in Frankfurt, with one more being scheduled in Seoul.
