Daniil Medvedev booked the 2023 US Open quarter-final after a win over Alex de Minaur and ensured him an appearance at the ATP Finals later this year.
Daniil Medvedev has had an interesting season so far because the Russian had moments when he looked like the best player in the world, only to look rather bleak in some other ones. He has over 50 wins so far this year, a couple of trophies won, but more recently, it's been kind of up and down.
He made it to the Wimbledon semi-final but looked strange during the two ATP Masters 1000 events leading up to the US Open. He didn't play well at either, and it was just odd seeing a player who is one of the best hard-court players getting beaten by players who generally wouldn't be able to.
The loss to Alex de Minaur was particularly shocking, but after the Australian took the first set of their US Open match, it started to look like a matchup problem. However, Medvedev wasn't number one by chance, and he quickly established control of the match, cruising to the finish line.
The victory booked him the US Open semi-final, but that's not the only thing. It secured him an appearance at the ATP Finals in Turin later this year. He ensured being there a while ago, but it wasn't official until this win, and he's glad about it.
"After Rome you kind of know I'm probably there. It's just nice to have it official, to kind of know. I can just stay at home and still go to Turin, which is very close from me. Would be a nice trip."
"That's a nice feeling to be there that early, probably together with Carlos and Novak. I think that's only second time I’ve qualified that early… Happy to be there fifth time in a row, and hopefully many more."
