'Cannot Make Everyone Happy': Alcaraz On Takeaways From Tennis

by Sebastian Dahlman

Carlos Alcaraz hasn't been a professional tennis player for a very long time but he's been around for long enough to learn quite a few important lessons.

Alcaraz is a sensational player at a very young age but far from a polished one. The Spaniard is quite critical of himself in losses, openly admitting to his mistakes. It shows a decent amount of self-awareness, which will help him in the long run.

While he's been around for only 2-3 years, he's already learned some pretty big lessons. He shared some of that ahead of the 2023 Shanghai Masters, openly admitting that whatever he does won't make everyone happy, so he just chooses to focus on himself.

“I cannot make everyone happy. I just have to be focused on myself, on being myself all the time. You know, don’t pretend to make everyone happy. It’s impossible. I’m going to say that, just to be focused on myself, being myself all the time, and that’s everything for me.”

He's right because not all things he does will make everybody happy, and focusing on yourself is sound advice we all could use. The Spaniard has the spotlight on himself, bringing a new set of challenges. He'll see himself get criticized over all sorts of things, and it's just part of the experience.

In the same press conference, Alcaraz touched upon Jannik Sinner, who produced a really solid effort to win the China Open. One of his wins came over Alcaraz as well.

I wasn’t surprised at all. I know the capacity of Jannik. I know his level. He’s one of the best in the world right now and he can beat anyone. I’m not surprised about the final. “So really happy for him, but honestly, I expect[ed] him to win, honestly, because the level that he was playing was unbelievable.”
