Carlos Alcaraz is the current number one on the ATP Tour, but he's also the youngest man to reach the Wimbledon final since Rafael Nadal in 2006.
The rise of Carlos Alcaraz has been a really fascinating thing to observe. It was pretty evident early on that he's going to be a really strong player. The consistency wasn't there but the flashes of brilliance were.
He won his maiden trophy in 2021 beating Richard Gasquet in the Croatia Open Umag final and even then it was pretty clear that he was going to be special. He demonstrated that further at the 2021 US Open a few weeks after that playing some amazing tennis to advance to the quarter-final.
The opening few games of his match against Stefanos Tsitsipas looked like he was the best player in the world and when he finally started to get consistent with that type of level, he quite literally became the best player in the world.
The 2022 US Open was the first Grand Slam he ever won and officially became the world number one; one year after flashing his potential at the same event. In the meantime, Alcaraz is up to 11 trophies with a chance to win a 12th on Sunday. It's a chance to add his second Grand Slam trophy too, as it's the Wimbledon final.
A tough one, against Novak Djokovic who comfortably defeated Jannik Sinner in the semi-final to set up the clash against Alcaraz. Fans are hoping for a spectacle and it's pretty much guaranteed but getting to the final has another significance.
It once again showed how strong of a player he is because he's the youngest Wimbledon finalist since Rafael Nadal in 2006. He was also the youngest number one ever so that tells you all you need to know.
When you're the youngest to do some amazing things in a sport with such a long history and such iconic names, you're doing something right. In Alcaraz's case, he's doing a lot of things right.
