Carlos Alcaraz defeated Hubert Hurkacz in three sets at the 2023 Cincinnati Masters, but he came awfully close to losing the match against the Polish player.
Alcaraz faced a match point against Hurkacz but saved it emphatically, letting out a huge roar. It was pretty evident how important the match was for him as he endured a couple of disappointing results recently, and winning trophies is just what he's accustomed to by now.
He'll get a chance to do that against Novak Djokovic on Sunday, but he will need to be much better than he was against Hurkacz. The match point awakened something in Alcaraz as he played a lot better as the match went on.
Speaking after the match against Hurkacz, Alcaraz admitted that he tried to stay in the moment - save the match point and go from there. It's the approach he will also need against Novak Djokovic to win the Cincinnati Final.
Yeah, it was really, really tough. I knew before the match that playing against Hubie is always tough. But we fought until the last ball.- Alcaraz on facing Hurkacz
That match ball down, I was thinking about try to save that match ball, keep it up, in that moment just to stay there all the time. I knew that I was going to have my chances if I saved that match ball. I did. I took the opportunity. I really, really happy to get the win today.
The match against the Serb is another big one for Alcaraz, who would ideally like to travel to New York with a trophy in his luggage. Getting another win over Djokovic would certainly boost his confidence, especially since they never played on hard courts.
Djokovic is widely considered one of the best hard court players in history, and beating him would do Alcaraz well.
