Alcaraz Avoids Nightmare Sinner Clash At US Open But Gets In-Form Zverev Instead

| by Evita Mueller

Carlos Alcaraz played one of his best matches ever last year to defeat Jannik Sinner in the US Open semi-final, booking the final showdown against Casper Ruud.

He would beat Casper Ruud in that final to win the trophy and become the youngest ATP number one ever but it was his win over Sinner that allowed all of that. It was a close match, one that Alcaraz could have technically lost, but he played amazing tennis and won.

It's one of the best matches he ever played in his career, and even the 20-year-old thinks that. Those are his words spoken after his win over Matteo Arnaldi hours ahead of the match between Alexander Zverev and Jannik Sinner. He was asked about possibly facing Sinner again and admitted that it would be quite tough.

Well, I think everybody wants that match. I think when the draw came out, everybody wants that potential quarterfinal, Jannik against me, because of the matches against him last year. It was one of the best matches that I've played in my career.

Against him is going to be a really tough one. The head-to-head is really, really close against him. I think we push to the limits each other when we face each other. We increase our level to the top. I love playing against him. It is a great battle.

He won't have to play Sinner this year because Alexander Zverev took care of that. The German outlasted the Italian in a 5-set epic which certainly boosts Alcaraz's chances against the German. Recovery won't be easy for him, and Alcaraz also has a few more hours on him.

Against Sascha, the head-to-head as well is really, really close. We've played great matches. He's playing really, really well. This year he's finding his top level again.
