Anna-Lena Friedsam is a German professional tennis player who was born on February 1, 1994, in Neuwied, Germany. Starting the sport at the tender age of 6 years old, it was the right age for her to build on her innate talent and start working on her dream of entering the world of professional tennis.

A regular at ITF tournaments from 2011, it was not until the 2014 season that she made her WTA main draw debut. It came at the Shenzhen Open, and a first-round match-up against Bojana Jovanovski Petrovic offered up the perfect opportunity to get her first win on the books.

Later that season came her debut at the Grand Slam level, but it was not to be for the German, who lost in the first round of the Roland Garros. Steady progress continued for Freidsam, with proof of that coming in the following season. The Austria Open in Linz in 2015 was her first bite of the cherry in a WTA final, but she did not manage to get over the line.

She carried this form into 2016, achieving her to-date career-best performance at a Grand Slam, reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open. It was a form that helped her on her way to her career-high singles ranking of world number 45 in August 2016.

All was to come crashing down the German, though, who, in 2016 and 2017, underwent two surgeries for a nasty shoulder injury. This kept her sidelined for a total of more than two years, with her making her long-awaited return in 2019 under the protected ranking scheme.

It did not take a great deal of time for Friedsam to find her best level again. She reached only her second-ever WTA final just a year after coming back at the 2020 Lyon Open, losing out only to former Grand Slam champion Sofia Kenin. This form continued into the first years of the decade, with her reaching two WTA quarterfinals in 2023 (Linz and Austin).
