Only Regret: Navratilova Says 'Having To Run Away Ruined Beautiful Tennis Life'

Few individuals have lived a life as rife with triumph and turmoil as tennis titan Martina Navratilova.

The 18-time Grand Slam champion and prodigal daughter of Czechoslovakia was recognized with a silver medal by Senate President Milos Vystrcil in the Czech Republic, acknowledging not only her athletic prowess but also her significant off-court contributions.

The award ceremony sparked a wave of emotions and a reflective mindset in Navratilova, who opened up about her mixed feelings. In an emotional interview upon her return to the Czech Republic, Navratilova, who also recently received a golden racket in Rome for her accomplishments, revealed the contrasting effects of her illustrious career and her painful departure from her native land.

However, Navratilova's journey wasn't devoid of obstacles. Fleeing the oppressive regime in Czechoslovakia was a significant event in her life that cast a long, unsettling shadow.

"I am often asked if I have any regrets. My only regret is that I had to take that step. Tennis made my life beautiful, but having to run away, it also ruined something."

Navratilova's escape to freedom, while ensuring her professional growth, inflicted a personal wound. It disrupted her familial relationships and left emotional scars that time could only partially heal.

"One does not realize how it will turn out with other people around. My sister suffered a lot, I won't even talk about my parents. I'm glad that tennis and sports are more international. That more and more children have the chance to play sports, get to the top and win."

Encouragingly, Navratilova finds solace in the progressive shift in the world of sport today, but also acknowledges there's still work to be done.

"But there are still those who do not have such an opportunity. So there is certainly room for improvement. But the situation is certainly many times better than it was in my time. At least now no children have to run away from the Czech Republic."
