Coco Gauff is a very outspoken player who doesn't shy away from complicated topics, and she touched upon the Israel-Gaza War as well.
Gauff is one of the leading players on the WTA Tour, which is good because she's not a player who will look the other way. She's a player who will speak on complicated topics, whether it would be the difference in pay on the men's and women's side of the sport or global conflicts.
The latter one was the question she tackled in a recent interview with The National ahead of the 2024 Dubai Championships when she addressed the terrible situation going on in the Gaza Strip. It's one of the most complicated geopolitical issues of modern times, with multiple attempts to solve it failing.
Throughout that time, human suffering has been immense, and that's what pains Gauff the most. She's fully aware of what is happening in the region, and she just prays for a resolution and the safety of everybody afflicted by it.
"I feel like it would be ignorant to say I’m not aware, I’m very aware of everything that's going on in Gaza. For me, I always say I pray for peace in the region. And I really don't like what's going on."
"For me, it's sometimes troubling to live the life I live, in knowing that so many kids and innocent people are dying on both ends, but especially in what's going on in Gaza and the occupation that’s happening."
Gauff would like to do more, but she can only raise awareness and donate to relief efforts, so that's what she wants to do.
"In my position, I know there's not much I can do other than raise awareness and donate. So that's what I encourage everyone to do and just pray for peace and demand peace and demand that this stops happening."
