Coco Gauff is one of the best players in the world, and she has a Grand Slam trophy in her cabinet, but there are still those who doubt her quality as a tennis player.
While an individual sport like tennis allows things to be analyzed, some people deny the facts. Gauff is, by all measures, a superb tennis player whose career has been on a legendary trajectory since she was 15 years old.
She's only 20 but already has a Grand Slam singles title and doubles trophy, which she won recently at Roland Garros. That's not the norm for any tennis player, let alone an average one.
Despite clearly being a fantastic player, Gauff still has many doubters. There is no reason for athletes to concern themselves with those people because it's not an argument based on facts.
Ignoring facts and creating fictional narratives doesn't make for somebody who will argue in good faith. Gauff, for the most part, does it because there is no point engaging with it. She has already written her name in history books, and spoke about her approach ahead of the 2024 US Open.
"Yeah, honestly, like, a couple days ago somebody commented on my TikTok and the comment said, why stress yourself out over -- it said, you've won literally and figuratively."
"Why stress yourself out over a victory lap? I was, like, that's actually a good perspective. No one can take that from me so why stress myself over something that I already have."
The goal for her is to win more, which is normal for any tennis player. She has yet to win a second Grand Slam trophy, but it will likely happen eventually. It might not be in two weeks, or a year, or two, but if she keeps working hard, it will come.
"I'm just wanting to add to that, whether it happens here in two weeks or next year here or at Australia or whatever, there's no point. So I think I saw that comment, like, three days ago, and I was, like, okay, I'm going to stick by that and use that, because it really changed my perspective coming into this."
However, she does use those who doubt her as motivation. Something just gets her fire burning when people come out with those narratives.
She doesn't even understand how people can root against someone's success; it doesn't make sense to her, but those who wish that on her motivate her to do even better.
"And, yeah, I still use the doubters as motivation. I know people have said things about me online and will continue to for the rest of my life, but I know it comes just out of a sense of, I don't know, maybe hatred or jealousy, I don't know. But for me, I never root on people's downfalls."
"Regardless of who you are, I'll never root on somebody's downfall. I'll always root for success. I just wish the rest of the world or people were like that, which most of them are, but there's always like the 2% that like to have their moment every now and then."
