Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios had some fiery exchanges in the past, but before the 2022 Australian Open, the Australian supported Djokovic, which changed their relationship.
Kyrgios is not afraid to say when he doesn't like something. On the other hand, he is also not afraid to show support when it matters, and Djokovic experienced both sides of the 27-year-old Australian.
Despite facing negative comments from the Australian player in the past, such as when Djokovic organized the Adria Tour during the COVID-19 pandemic, he received support when he needed it the most and still remembers it.
Now, they will meet in the 2022 Wimbledon Championships final, and ahead of their meeting, Djokovic spoke about how their relationships improved. The Serbian player also thinks that Kyrgios is entertaining on the tennis court.
"You often see these type of situations on the court with Kyrgios. It can be fun, but maybe not so much for his opponent. Whether people like him or not, it is a fact that he draws attention to tennis."
"I think it is good that he attracts a group of young people, who like him because of his playing style and because he is different – I do not think that it is bad for our sport."
At the same time, Djokovic remembers how Kyrgios publicly supported him only a few months ago. Although he doesn't agree with all of his comments, especially on the tennis court, the Serbian is grateful for Kyrgios' support.
"Maybe his comments on the court are sometimes debatable, but it is authentic Kyrgios and I respect that. Although he has been saying bad stuff about me for years, he stood by me."
"When I was going through the most difficult period, he was one of the rare few people who spoke on my behalf publicly. I am very grateful for that."
