Novak Djokovic won the Wimbledon Championships for the seventh time in his career on Sunday, and after an early morning walk on the Centre Court, the Serbian flew home to Belgrade to receive a grand parade.
Djokovic is no stranger to winning trophies, and as iconic as winning Wimbledon the first time was, winning it for a seventh time easily trumps that. There are just a few players that have come close to doing that.
Every time somebody like him wins another Grand Slam, the legacy grows. It’s an important aspect of an athlete’s career, especially for Djokovic, who has often spoken about the importance of legacy.
He’s been on record stating his desire to win as much as possible, and he certainly proved it on Sunday. Facing Nick Kyrgios in the Wimbledon final was certainly something new for Djokovic, but after a slow start, he turned things around and won the match in four sets.
Kyrgios didn’t play his best tennis, but part of that was simply Djokovic being too good. After winning, the usual protocol ensued. He took plenty of photos with the trophy and had a walk with his family on Centre Court following the final.
Straight after that, the Serbian jumped on a plane to head back home to Belgrade, where a parade awaited him. The parade was held on Monday, where Djokovic was greeted by thousands of his compatriots as he showcased the iconic Wimbledon trophy.
It was a testament to the popularity he enjoys as the most iconic sportsperson to ever hail from the country. The emotion was palpable with Djokovic, who has always taken great pride in representing his country in sports.
While tennis might be an individual sport, he is playing for all of his people, and the appreciation they have for him is clearly visible.
