Holger Rune is not playing very good tennis right now, and unfortunately, as a result, he's getting quite a bit of hate on social media for it.
Holger Rune has recently dealt with the most challenging obstacle of his tennis career so far. He's dealt with a back injury that prevented him from playing really solid tennis, so much so that he actually had a 7-match losing streak.
It's not common for a Top 10 ranked player to have such a negative streak, but Rune snapped it in Beijing at the China Open by beating Felix Auger-Aliassime. He declared himself to be fit before that event as well, so things were looking good.
The Shanghai Masters wasn't very good as he was lost in his first match, and as you can imagine, he got a lot of hate on social media for it, especially from people who bet on him winning. Any time a player loses a match, there is a barrage of hate coming his way on social media. It's nothing new, unfortunately, as players of ten talk about it.
It is wrong though, especially when that hate turns to threats involving your family. That's what happened to Rune, which prompted his sister Alma to speak out on social media. She said that any threats will be reported to the police.
Just to be very clear, threats against me and my family has and will be reported to the police. And for information, the consequences are not milder because it’s online. And for all the other hateful messages.. please, it doesn’t hurt to try and be nice.— Rune's sister Alma on Instagram<br>
Rune himself spoke out about abuse a few times, but he mostly refrains from doing so. Getting threats might change his approach, though he's yet to speak out about this. We'll see if he ultimately does.
