Rublev Keeps Shanghai Masters Hopes Alive With Another Impressive Win

| by Evita Mueller

Andrey Rublev is keeping his Shanghai Masters campaign going as the Russian bested Tommy Paul in two sets.

The Russian has had an up-and-down season, which didn't feature many ATP trophies compared to previous years. He's generally been a player who won a couple of trophies each year but missed out on the big ones.

That trend continued this year as he still couldn't break the quarterfinal barrier at the Grand Slam level despite winning two trophies. Even with the up and down form, Rubev played in a couple of finals, winning the Monte Carlo Masters earlier this year.

He'd like to add another big trophy in Shanghai, and so far, it's been looking really good. He took on Tommy Paul for a spot in the quarter-final and bested the American in a very close and competitive match.

The first set was a complicated one for Rublev as Paul brought his best player which made it tough for the Russian to stay in rallies. The American jumped out to a 4-2 lead but Rublev remained engaged and got a bit lucky to break back immediately.

It flipped the momentum completely, with Rublev now on the upper hand as Paul's level dropped off, and it proved costly. The Russian snatched away the opening set 7-5, and that set the tone for the rest of the match. While Paul stabilized well enough, he never quite found the old level.

Rublev was very comfortable on serve, as he didn't face a single break point in the second set. Paul saved an early one but eventually surrendered his serve at the end of the second set to lose the match.

The final score was 7-5 7-5 for Rublev, who is looking really sharp in Shanghai. Up next is Ugo Humbert, who is playing really well this week with a win over Stefanos Tsitsipas earlier in the week.
