'Obviously Not My Best': Alcaraz On His Level At Cincinnati Masters

by Evita Mueller

Carlos Alcaraz has been winning matches, but his wins at the 2023 Cincinnati Masters are neither impressive nor clean; something he's well aware of.

Alcaraz's last big victory was at Wimbledon, where he made a stunning effort to stun Novak Djokovic in the final. He's been pretty okay since then but nowhere near that peak, and that's okay. Learning to win matches despite not playing your best is part of being a great player.

Novak Djokovic has done it for years, starting slow in events only to peak when it matters most. Alcaraz is yet to master that craft, but he's getting better at it. His level was not good enough in Toronto, but it's looking a bit better this week with the hope of increasing exponentially at the US Open.

I feel like I'm playing well. Obviously not my best. I can increase my level, of course. But I feel the opponents, when they are playing against me, I'm going to say, well, they play a little bit better Obviously, I will say that you can be better every day.

While his level might not have been the best, the support he's received in Cincinnati has been out of this world. It's still something that surprises him, even if he's technically the face of the sport now. He has a lot of gratitude towards the fans.

Well, I felt it since day one. It's crazy to feel the love from the people. I see the full court in every practice. In the matches, as well. They stay late to watch my matches, as well. It's crazy to feel it. I'm really grateful, yeah, to have it, to have the support from the people. I hope to have them in the semifinal, as well.
