'No Anger': Djokovic Upon Return To US Open After Forced Two-Year Hiatus

Novak Djokovic will return to the US Open after a short absence, but he has no negative feelings leading up to the event.

This situation isn't unique for Djokovic, as he experienced something similar earlier this year. He missed last year's Australian Open after being deported, but it didn't phase him much upon returning. Yes, he did admit to being emotional in his first match, but rather quickly, Djokovic got used to it and cruised to a trophy.

New York is a bit different for him. It's an event where he generally lost the finals he played, finding the crowd hostile. The ovation he got in the final against Medvedev the last time he played brought him to tears, as it was not something he had not experienced before in New York.

That's why this one will likely be more challenging than Melbourne, but he's not approaching it with any negative emotions. After all, this is a Grand Slam, and it's what he's essentially most playing for at this part of his career.

Well, Grand Slams are the biggest goals that I have in my career at the moment. I always speak about that, that I aim to peak and perform my best in Grand Slams. I don't know how many more slams I'll have. I'll still keep going.

I don't have an end in my mind at the moment. I also understand that things are different when you're 36, so I have to be more appreciative, a bit more I guess present, treating every Grand Slam as maybe your last one in terms of commitment and performance.

He further confirmed that for him, it's nothing more than returning to a familiar place to make more history. Time will tell whether he gets it done, but his most recent Cincinnati outing certainly supports that.

I see this every Grand Slam that I play right now as really a golden opportunity to make more history. Of course, there's a big significance to that.

I wouldn't say adds a bit more, the fact I haven't played here for two years, it's just the feeling is pretty much the same. There's always these expectations, excitement, and ambition to win the title. That's pretty much the same this year.
