Matteo Berrettini Provides Update After Painful US Open Exit

by Sebastian Dahlman

Matteo Berrettini broke his silence after exiting the US Open with an ankle injury, admitting that he doesn't know the extent of the injury yet.

Matteo Berrettini was only just getting back into the swing of things following several injury woes that kept him away from the courts this year. The Italian made a surprise comeback at Wimbledon, playing some solid tennis, hoping that it would carry over to the US Open.

It did for a while, but then he ran into Arthur Rinderknech, who was in full control of the match. Berrettini slipped during a rally, completely twisting his ankle, remaining unable to get up after it happened. Eventually, he did, but he could only retire from the match as the doctor took a look at it.

It was an unfortunate ending for Berrettini, who continues to experience setback after setback. The injury looked scary, and he still doesn't know the extent of it yet. Providing a minor update on Instagram, Berrettini said he's waiting for scan results.

Certainly not the way I hoped my US Open would end. I have been working closely with medical experts since I left the court. We are now waiting for scan results to determine the best next steps. Thank you very much for all the kind messages. I will provide a further update soon

The injury didn't look good, but you never know with these ankle injuries. Sometimes, they look worse than they truly are, so fans are hopeful to see him return before the end of this year. There is a good chance that he won't, though, and that the US Open was his final event.

We won't know until he provides further updates but the feelings remain. It was very unfortunate and the last thing that he needed.
