Novak Djokovic is the main favorite for the upcoming 2024 Australian Open, but it won't be easy, as we saw recently.
Djokovic finished the 2023 season as world number one on the ATP Tour and it was quite deserved. He didn't play as much as some other players yet he won some of the biggest trophies.
Winning three of the four Grand Slams obviously comes before all others, but sustaining that in 2024 will be hard. We've seen quite a few players step-up in recent months, most notably Jannik Sinner, who bested Novak Djokovic twice in the span of weeks.
That was a pretty clear wake-up call to Djokovic, according to Alex Corretja, who talked about the upcoming 2024 season with Eurosport.
I'm sure that he's going to keep on winning Slams, but it's going to be tougher and tougher and he knows that. And in a way, I feel the match that he lost against [Jannik] Sinner in the Davis Cup might be good for him.
It's a wake-up call to say, ‘okay, I'm doing unbelievably, but I can't relax for one second because some of the guys behind me, are going to push me so much. They're very dangerous and they know they can beat me now.’
If competition bothered Djokovic, he would have never become the player he ultimately did, so his competition becoming better and better won't bother him.
It will inspire him, giving fans a pretty spectacular 2024 season. Add the Olympics in there for good measure, and we're truly looking at a pretty exciting year of tennis.
