Christopher Eubanks won over one million in prize money in 2023, but he still prefers to fly economy, as per a recent interview.
The American had a tremendous breakout in 2023 that seemingly came out of nowhere. In reality, it was just a product of many years of hard work with a bit of luck and correct timing.
Eubanks was a wild card regular for many years during the events in the United States, so he got a chance to play plenty of great players over the years.
It allowed him to get ready for the moment, which eventually came this year. He played excellently in Miami, which pushed him further up the rankings, giving him more opportunities.
He then took the grass season by storm with some impressive performances in Mallorca and then Wimbledon, which he kept up for the rest of the year.
After starting the year ranked 123rd, he finished the year ranked 34th with over $1 million in prize money winnings. It wasn't enough to change his flying practices as he still flies economy most of the time.
According to his recent interview with Sports Illustrated, other options are too expensive for him as he prefers to be conservative with his spending.
Oh, man. It’s really, really expensive. I’m still turning right, and I’m going on to the back. Occasionally, domestic flights, I’ll get upgraded just because of my status. And if I can get the exit row with nothing in front of me, I’m booking that seat every time. If I can’t get that, those are the rare occasions in which I say, all right, I may need to splurge a little bit and get Comfort Plus.
He was asked a follow-up on whether that remains a practice during long flights like the ones towards Australia and he responded that it does. He doesn't do anything special for long flights if he gets there early enough to properly recover.
At the end of the day, it depends on how much the flights are. Like, I’m not about to jump in and swallow seven, eight grand one way! I’ll get there early enough to where my body will be able to recover.
