Carlos Alcaraz is the top player on the ATP Tour right now, and he's also overwhelmingly energetic on a tennis court, so much so that it's very hard to match, according to Holger Rune.
There are very few players on Tour who know Carlos Alcaraz as well as Holger Rune. They competed against each other for many years before making their way to the pros. They essentially grew up together and will see their rivalry flourish in the pros as well.
Speaking ahead of the Canadian Open, Rune talked about Alcaraz, explaining how his energy on the court can be quite overwhelming. It's really tough to match, and it's something that Novak Djokovic struggled with during their Wimbledon match. The Serbian appeared in control, but Alcaraz kept pushing and ultimately won.
Rune himself struggled against Alcaraz at Wimbledon, particularly because he didn't feel his best during that match. It's unfortunate, but it also speaks to how relentless the Spaniard is when he feels like he has an edge in the matchup.
I think the energy he brings to the court is hard to match. And he has big variation in his game, it's not just one shot, I think it's the whole game, he's able to mix it up when he needs to, and make it uncomfortable for the opponent, and not many players do that these days, so it's definitely a good advantage to be able to do that.
Rune himself plays with a lot of energy, and it's suited him well a couple of times, but even he is amazed by what Alcaraz is being able to bring to the courts. It's inspiring as he pushes him to work harder, which was never the problem when it came to him. Having a rival like that will suit him well, as we've seen many times in the sport's long history.
