Alcaraz, Djokovic, Medvedev & Tsitsipas in 4-way battle for No. 1 at Roland Garros

| by Evita Mueller

Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Novak Djokovic could all emerge as number one in the world after Roland Garros.

Last year's US Open saw five players battle it out for the number one spot in the ATP Rankings and this year's Roland Garros will have four. It was Carlos Alcaraz who won that race by winning the US Open and becoming the youngest number one ever.

He's still number one having recently overtaken Novak Djokovic whose clay struggles in recent weeks contributed to the drop in rankings and according to Mayn the main favourite for the trophy. All players who will battle it out for the number one rank could technically win the event. How they might end up as number one will be broken down below.

Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz is the main favourite for the event alongside Djokovic and should he win he'll be number one whatever else happens. He'll remain number one also if he reaches the final and Medvedev doesn't win the trophy. The semi-final could be enough if he avoids the Russian getting to the final and Djokovic winning the trophy.

Medvedev

Medvedev has had a superb two weeks in Rome proving to everybody he can win trophies on clay. It's unlikely that he wins Roland Garros but he could. If he does he'll be number one regardless of what anybody else does. He can be number one with the final as well unless Djokovic or Alcaraz win the trophy. The semi-final would give him number one as well unless Alcaraz gets to the quarters or Djokovic wins the trophy.

Djokovic

Djokovic will return to number one if he wins the title regardless of what the others do. He can also be number one with the final but he would need to avoid Alcaraz getting to the quarters or Medvedev reaching the semi-finals.

Tsitsipas

Tsitsipas has the lowest chances of all players as he needs to win the trophy and some pretty early exits from others. If he does win he needs Alcaraz to crash out in the first three rounds or Medvedev to fail before the semis to be number one.
