The 2023
Citi Open in Washington is one of the ATP 500 tournaments that offers a 64-man
draw, and thanks to that also many interesting matchups.
Running from July 31st to August 6th, the 2023 Citi Open in Washington, also called the 2023 Mubadala Citi DC Open, will be held without the defending champion as
Nick Kyrgios was forced to withdraw from the tournament.
He wasn't the only one as
projected top seed Daniil Medvedev also pulled out, and Denis Shapovalov
also announced his withdrawal. But even despite these withdrawals, the tournament still has a lot to offer.
With many American players in the draw,
Taylor Fritz is seeded first, and like all the first sixteen seeded players, he has a BYE in the first round, focusing on his second-round match-up. For the highest-ranked American in the
ATP Rankings, that will be a match against either a qualifier or Max Purcell.
On the other side of the draw,
Frances Tiafoe will play against the winner of the match between
Aslan Karatsev and a qualifier, with a potential third-round clash with rising American talent,
Ben Shelton,
who received a late wild card, and as the fourteenth seed, he'll start against either a qualifier or Emilio Gomez.
On the other hand, Fritz will also face a difficult possible third-round match as he may need to play against the former world no. 1,
Andy Murray, who is seeded fifteenth and will start against Brandon Nakashima or Aleksandar Vukic.
Wimbledon breakthrough star,
Christopher Eubanks, will also play at the tournament as the eleventh seed, and in the second round, he can also face a difficult challenge in either Lloyd Harris or
one of the wild card recipients,
Kei Nishikori, who is
making a comeback to the ATP Tour, and he's doing really well so far.
Felix Auger-Aliassime is one of the players who has been sidelined for quite some time, but now, the Canadian is ready to forget injuries, and he'll be seeded third in Washington. In the second round, he'll play against the winner of the match between
Yibing Wu and Yosuke Watanuki.
Another player who had injury problems is
Sebastian Korda, who
experienced a disappointing exit at Wimbledon, and in the second round of the 2023 Citi Open, the American will play against
Maxime Cressy or Alexander Shevchenko.
Two more players making a comeback are
Gael Monfils and
Kevin Anderson, but both will face a difficult draw as the Frenchman will play against a qualifier, and meet the sixth-seeded Alexander Bublik if he wins.
On the other hand, Kevin Anderson will play against Jordan Thompson, with a second-round clash with the seventh-seeded
Adrian Mannarino. To see the full draw make sure to check it out below, and if you're interested in the
