Nick Kyrgios Withdraws From 2023 Citi Open In Washington

Nick Kyrgios withdrew from the 2023 Citi Open in Washington as his injury woes continue and he won't defend his title at the ATP 500 event.

Nick Kyrgios' withdrawal from the Citi Open in Washington shouldn't come as a huge surprise to fans as he didn't get any competitive action since his playing one match at the Stuttgart Open. First, there were some concerns with the knee, which he referenced during the loss in Stuttgart.

The knee appeared good to go, however, a recent wrist issue popped up and prevented him from playing at Wimbledon, and it's been a struggle ever since. Kyrgios showed himself in a brace on social media with no set date of return though fans hoped it could be in Washington.

It won't as he has now added his name to the list of players that have already withdrawn from the event. Denis Shapovalov was the first big name that pulled out of the event due to an injury. Daniil Medvedev followed up earlier today and now it's Kyrgios too.

The organizers were putting together a really impressive entry list for the ATP 500 event, but it's now been significantly weakened. Native fans will still get a chance to see American players such as Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe, which should draw some eyeballs.

For Kyrgios, this is the latest setback in a very disappointing season that ultimately saw him play only one match so far. It comes after a standout season last year with 46 wins and only 9 losses. His last tennis-related appearance was last week at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown in Los Angeles where he appeared in very high spirits while coaching Frances Tiafoe.

Fans will be holding out hope for a US Open participation from the Aussie though it's not looking very promising right now.
