Nick Kyrgios withdrew from the 2023 Citi Open in Washington as his injury woes continue, and he won't defend his title at the ATP 500 event.
Kyrgios' withdrawal from the Citi Open in Washington shouldn't come as a huge surprise to fans, as he hasn't gotten into any competitive action since he played one match at the Stuttgart Open.
First, there were some concerns with his knee, which he referenced during the loss in Stuttgart. Later, his knee finally appeared good to go, but a recent wrist issue popped up and prevented him from playing at Wimbledon, and it's been a struggle for the Australian ever since.
Kyrgios showed himself in a brace on social media with no set date of return, even though fans hoped it could be in Washington. It won't happen, as he has now added his name to the list of players who have already withdrawn from the event.
Denis Shapovalov was the first player who withdrew from the event due to an injury. Daniil Medvedev followed up, and Kyrgios added his name to the list of withdrawals as well.
The organizers were putting together a really impressive entry list for the ATP 500 event, but it's now been significantly weakened. Home fans will still get a chance to see American players such as Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe, who should draw some eyeballs.
For Kyrgios, this is the latest setback in a very disappointing season that ultimately saw him play only one match so far. It comes after a standout season last year with 47 matches and only 10 losses.
His last tennis-related appearance was last week at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown in Los Angeles, where he appeared in very high spirits while coaching Frances Tiafoe.
Fans will be holding out hope for a US Open participation from the Australian, even though it's not looking very promising right now.
