Jessica Pegula took on Camila Giorgi again, defeating the Italian again to get her US Open campaign underway.

Jessica Pegula had a pretty interesting build-up towards the US Open. She was amazing in Montreal, reaching the final and then getting a bit lucky with the scheduling allowing her to easily beat Samsonova in the final.

Her Cincinnati experience went vastly different as she was beaten early by Marie Bouzkova, so it's a mixed bag, really. The defeat probably came because of fatigue, so it didn't really change anybody's expectations regarding her US Open chances, which many deem to be pretty solid.

She's not the top favourite, but she's certainly in the mix. The draw gave her Camila Giorgi, a tricky player who can beat you if you give her the chance. Pegula did a pretty good job of limiting her chances in the match, which helped her win.

The first set saw Pegula exert pressure on her opponent, which is the key to beating her. Giorgi didn't respond well, blasting 16 unforced errors in 8 games, far from the level she needed to beat the American.

The second set was fairly similar in that regard as Pegula took an early break once more to take a 4-2 lead after which she cruised. Pegula won most of the crucial rallies which contributed to Giorgi never finding her rhythm in this one.

The second set overall was more impressive from Pegula as she served better, which made everything a lot easier on her serve. Giorgi was pretty good as well but once again struggled with control, blasting too many errors. Not being able to win points behind her second serve was also a huge problem.

In the end, the final score was 6-2 6-2 for Pegula who moves on to the next round.
