The 2024 Strasbourg Open is one of two WTA tournaments running in the final week before Roland Garros, from May 19th to 25th.
This year, the tournament is part of the WTA 500 series, featuring a packed draw of 32 players and a substantial financial package. The confirmed prize money for the event stands at an impressive $922,573, over three times last year's total pay.
Despite the tournament being given a tricky spot in the calendar, it has always attracted some of the best WTA stars in the game. And this year, the pay is significantly better, so it will be an added motivation for those competing.
The obvious surprise name in the field is World No. 5 Jessica Pegula, who is the sole Top 10 player in the initial entry list. The American is seeking plenty of court time before Roland Garros, having been sidelined with injury since guiding the USA to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in April.
But Pegula's presence in the field is doubtful, as she has hinted at missing the clay Slam. If she doesn't feature in Strasbourg, then Italy's top-ranked woman, Jasmine Paolini, will be instilled as the top seed.
Beatriz Haddad Maia, Danielle Collins, Elina Svitolina, and Madison Keys should be considered among the heavy favorites for the title. Svitolina will be chasing her third title in the French city after winning her first title as a mother last year there.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Emma Navarro are some of the standout performers of 2024. Meanwhile, Barbora Krejcikova, who famously completed the Strasbourg-French Open double in 2021, is also expected to return from injury.
Emma Raducanu is one of two confirmed wild cards. The other is French veteran Alize Cornet, who will play her last non-Slam tournament before her impending retirement at Roland Garros.
The prize money distribution will begin in the first round. These players will pocket $8,860 and receive 1 point. As for those who win at least one main draw match, they will take home $13,170 and get 60 points.
Players only need to win two matches to reach the last eight, with a monetary compensation of $24,200 and 108 points waiting for them. Semifinalists will earn $51,205 on top 195 points, a more significant return than the player who won last year's edition.
The champion in Strasbourg will grow their net worth by $142,000 and receive 500 points. As for the beaten finalist, she will bank $87,655 and receive 325 points. The full breakdown can be seen below.
